Continuity of Tradition:"Taste"of Fiction Criticism in the Late Qing Dynasty
"Taste"is one of the important categories of ancient literary theory.Critics in the late Qing Dynasty used it in the propaganda and interpretation of new novels to enrich and amplify its connotation. In the late Qing Dynasty, the critics used the category"taste"roughly in two circumstances:first,to evaluate the text with"taste",mainly focusing on the fictional sto-ry,plotting and the diction or use language;second,"taste"is regarded either as one of the"original qualities"of fiction,or a characteristic to distinguish fiction from other literary forms,or promoted as a critical measure to evaluate the translation of foreign novels. The late Qing fiction critics'understanding and use of the category of"taste"did not break away from the tradi-tional literary theory, and it was also changed with the times, showing a dual characteristic of both learning from the past and opening up new ideas.
