On the Absent Narrator,Zero Narrator and No Narrator in Fictive Narratives
In study of narrative theory,the narrator in fictive narratives is an extremely important concept.It plays a cen-tral role in exploring the telling of narrative text and its internal communication.Along with the central concept of the narrator,a series of related subsidiary concepts have emerged.This article focuses on three interrelated concepts:absent narrator,zero narrator,and no narrator.Clarifying their exact meanings,pointing out their functions and explaining some of their ambiguity and contradictions can help understand the composition and internal mechanism of narrative texts.The narrative situation pres-ented by an absent narrator,a zero narrator,or a no narrator is a partial state in which the narrator temporary hidden,or the concept itself is contradictory and difficult to establish,or one narrative voice is used instead of another.As narrative subject,the narrator is an indispensable element in narrative text,and the relationship between narrator,narration,and text is integral.
