The Confucian Tradition and the"Xin Min"Perspective in Novels Translated by Lin Shu in the Late Qing Period
The novels translated by Lin Shu contained rich Confucian traditions,which is one of the main reasons why they were widely spread at that time.The Confucian tradition in these novels generally showed three aspects:firstly,the"Loy-alty"of Confucianism was applied to the romance,which was manifested as the loyalty of female to male;secondly,the"Filial Piety"of Confucianism was applied to the respect of the younger generation to the elders,which was respectively manifested as the younger generation's respect,concern and care to the elders;thirdly,the"Etiquette"of Confucianism was applied to the virtues of interpersonal communication,which not only showed the various etiquettes in interpersonal communication,but also recorded people's compliance with various etiquettes.The novels translated by Lin Shu were not just a simple use of the Confu-cian traditions,but applied it as a medium to express deep consideration on enlightening the people,the theme of the times.
