Assessment of Preoperative Mild Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Patients
Mild cognitive impairment(MCI)is prevalent in the elderly. The presence of preoperative cognitive impairment may increase the risk of developing perioperative neurocognitive impairment and affect the physical and mental health of elderly patients. It is of great value to perform preoperative cognitive screening. However, this practice has not been widely implemented.Primary test for MCI is the neuropsychological scales.Several cognitive assessment scales have been proposed in national and international studies.Screening tools appropriate for the preoperative setting need to be clinically manageable, brief and rapid, and valid and reliable. There is no consensus on which scales are appropriate for preoperative cognitive screening. The development of more efficient and simple cognitive screening tools remains a future endeavor.
