Objective To explore the incidence of alexithymia in elderly patients with schizophrenia and the influence of alexithymia on mental symptoms. Methods A prospective cohort study was conducted to select elderly schizophrenic patients admitted to Department of Psychiatry of the Second People's Hospital of Shangqiu City from January 2019 to May 2023.After admission, the Toronto alexithymia scale(TAS-20)and the positive and negative symptoms scale(PANSS)were used to assess the alexithymia and mental symptoms of schizophrenic patients. The status of alexithymia in patients with different clinical characteristics was compared, and the relationship between alexithymia and mental symptoms of schizophrenic patients was analyzed by point binary correlation. Results A total of 70 elderly schizophrenics were included,47 of whom had alexithymia, accounting for 67.14%.The TAS-20 score of 70 patients was(57.39±7.02),which was at a moderate level of impairment. There was a statistical significant difference between the occurrence group and the non-occurrence group in terms of residence, only child, family support, depression, anxiety and mental symptoms(P<0.05).There was no statistical difference in other clinical features(P>0.05).The point binary correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between alexithymia and mental symptoms in schizophrenic patients(r>0,P<0.05).Conclusion The risk of alexithymia in elderly schizophrenic patients is high, and alexithymia is in the middle level. The more serious the alexithymia is,the worse the mental symptoms are.
