Effect of dietary nursing based on empowerment theory on nutritional status and quality of life in patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy
Objective To evaluate the effect of empowerment theory on nutritional status and quality of life in dieta-ry nursing of patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods A total of 90 patients with gastric cancer who received chemotherapy in the Department of Gastroenterology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from A-pril 2023 to March 2024 were selected by convenient sampling method.According to the allocation of ward at the first ad-mission,the patients were divided into the control group and the research group,45 cases in each group. The study group received dietary care based on empowerment theory, while the control group received traditional dietary care. The assess-ment indicators included nutritional compliance, nutritional support status, incidence of malnutrition, peripheral blood nu-trition and quality of life scores. Results The dietary compliance(91.11%)and nutritional support(86.67%)of the study group were higher than those of the control group(55.56%and 37.78%),and the difference was statistically signifi-cant(χ2=14.556,P=0.001;χ2=22.878,P<0.001).The incidence of malnutrition in the study group(15.56%)was lower than that in the control group(51.11%),and the difference was statistically significant(χ2=17.566,P=0.001).The mean values of total protein, serum prealbumin and albumin in peripheral blood of the study group were higher than those of the control group(t=28.296,P<0.001;t=5.238,P<0.001;t=17.174,P<0.001).The study group had higher overall health status, social function, role function, cognitive function, emotional function and physical function scores than those in the control group(t=7.706,P<0.001;t=5.263,P<0.001;t=9.069,P<0.001;t=7.793,P<0.001;t=5.580,P<0.001;t=10.040,P<0.001);the nausea/vomiting,fatigue,insomnia,diarrhea,constipa-tion and loss of appetite scores in the study group were lower than those in the control group(t=9.047,P<0.001;t=5.089,P<0.001;t=4.232,P<0.001;t=6.560,P<0.001;t=5.047,P<0.001;t=11.892,P<0.001).Con-clusion The dietary nursing model based on the empowerment theory can effectively improve the nutritional status and quality of life of patients with gastric cancer undergoing chemotherapy, and reduce the side effects related to treatment.
