Study on the English Translation of the Decocting and Taking Methods of Chinese Medicine in Shāng Hán Lùn from the Perspective of Thick Translation
This paper summarized and sorted out the decocting and taking method in Shāng Hán Lùn,and divided them into five parts:the decoction solvent, the decoction method, the duration and degree of heating, the decoction usage, and post medication care. Then taking Ganlan water,"the rice is well-cooked,the decoction is finished""Mi Shu Tang Cheng"decocting method, mild fire,"swallow a small amount",and the medication care after taking Guizhi Decoction(桂枝汤)as examples to evaluateunder the guidance of thick translation method. This paper analyzed the explanatory texts added in two English versions from the perspectives of language, communication, and professionalism, translated by LI Zhaoguo and Nigel Wiseman, and explored the translation principles and the scale of thick translation. Both translators had extensively used thick translation to enrich the content, and achieved the goal of spreading Chinese medicine. However, there are also some cases encountered the problem of being"too thick".In terms of the translation of decocting and taking method of Chinese medicine, the translation should convey the meaning of the original text, especially important information,in detail and faithfully through thick translation and other translation methods.Meanwhile, the density of textual information should be increased,in order to avoid supplementary contents hold a dominant position.
