(De)Legitimation Strategies of Acupuncture Reports in American Mainstream Newspapers
(De)legitimation strategies used in acupuncture reports in American mainstream newspapers were analyzed under the guidance of Theo van Leeuwen's legitimation framework. It is found that the American news media had a relatively positive attitude towards acupuncture, frequently using authorization strategies, viewing experimental results as significant evidence to(de)legitimize acupuncture, and rarely interpreting acupuncture based on traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)theory. It is suggested that the news media attach great importance to the results of scientific research, and utilize a variety of legitimation strategies, particularly authorization,to report on TCM abroad, that TCM academia strengthen the evidence-based research of TCM,and that translators of TCM promote the pop-science translation of TCM theory,to jointly enhance international discourse power of TCM and promote the international communication of TCM.
