The Theory and Regulation of Middle Qi under the Circular Motion Model
Circular motion is a systematic thinking mode in traditional Chinese medicine, and middle Qi is an important element of the circular motion theory.Based on the relevant discussions of HUANG Yuanyu and PENG Ziyi, this article explores what middle Qi is,and explains the physiology, pathology, and treatment methods of middle Qi.Middle Qi belongs to the earth, below the chest and above the navel, between the spleen and stomach and distributed throughout the body, which is relative equilibrium of Yin and Yang, elevation and depression. The middle Qi is born from xianghuo, which is the pivot of the circular movement and the driving force of the body's acquired foundation.Middle Qi is prone to decline. Most of the middle Qi diseases belong to cold-dampness syndrome, but syndrome of consumption of fluid due to intense heat is more critical. The treatment of middle Qi should be regulating rise and fall, balancing cold and temperature, and coordinating the movement of the wheel and axle, and the medication should be calm and light. The treatment methods can be divided into direct and indirect ones:direct methods include moderation, compensation, maintenance, adjustment and care.Indirect treatment methods include reducing xianghuo, warming kidney water, soothing liver and promoting diuresis.A case study of ZHANG Fuli's treatment of"heart failure"based on the theory of middle Qi is cited as evidence. We hope to provide new ideas and methods for the clinical application of circular motion theory and the development of systems thinking in Chinese medicine.
