The efficacy of curcumin on rat models of polycystic ovary syndrome:a Meta-analysis
Objective To systematically evaluate the therapeutic effect of curcumin on a rat model of Polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang Data,VIP,Chinese Biomedical Literature Database(CBM),Web of Science,PubMed,and Embase were searched from their inception to January 1,2023.Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 16.0.Outcome indicators included levels of sex hormones, blood glucose, inflammatory factors, and PI3K/AKT protein levels. Results Eight randomized controlled animal experiments were included in the Meta-analysis.The results showed that compared with the control group, curcumin improved testosterone(SMD=-2.66,95%CI[-3.72,-1.61],P=0.000),Progesterone(SMD=2.82,95%CI[2.11,3.54],P=0.045),luteinizing hormone(SMD=-2.76,95%CI[-4.28,-1.23],P=0.000),fasting blood glucose(SMD=-2.82,95%CI[-3.77,-1.86],P=0.000),fasting insulin(SMD=-2.44,95%CI[-3.40,-1.49],P = 0.000),homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance(SMD =-2.68,95%CI[-3.66,-1.69],P=0.000),C-reactive Protein(SMD=-1.96,95%CI[-2.71,-1.22],P=0.032),interleukin-6(SMD=-2.48,95%CI[-3.25,-1.72],P=0.032).However,there was no significant difference in estradiol(SMD=-2.07,95%CI[-6.35,2.20],P=0.000),follicle-stimulating hormone(SMD=0.76,95%CI[-0.63,2.15],P=0.000),tumor necrosis factor-α(SMD=-1.64,95%CI[-6.02,2.73],P=0.000),PI3K protein activity expression level(SMD=-0.26,95%CI[-2.44,1.92],P = 0.000),or AKT protein activity expression level(SMD =-2.26,95%CI[-6.14,1.63],P=0.000).Conclusion Curcumin can be used as a supportive treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome by reducing blood glucose, alleviating inflammation, and regulating hormonal disorders through various mechanisms. However, more high-quality research is needed to further verify these findings.
