Research progress on the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in treating radiation enteritis
Radiation enteritis(RE)is one of the common complications of radiation therapy, and its occurrence and development involve multiple pathogenic mechanisms. In recent years, the role of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)in the treatment of RE has received attention gradually.Single Chinese medicine and compound can reduce the release of pro-inflammatory factors and inhibit inflammatory reactions by interfering with multiple signaling pathways. They can also increase the expression of antioxidant enzymes and reduce the production of oxygen free radicals. They can resist oxidative stress, repair DNA damage and reduce cell apoptosis by inhibiting the tumor protein p53(TP53)pathway and the Caspase apoptosis pathway.By increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus,Bifidobacterium, and Prevotella, and reducing the number of pathogenic bacteria such as Enterococcus and Escherichia, the gut microbiota and its metabolites can be regulated.By maintaining a balance between helper T cell 17(Th17)/regulatory T cells(Treg)and Th1/Th2,the gut immune system is regulated. The gut microcirculation is improved by increasing intestinal blood flow, and intestinal epithelial regeneration is accelerated by promoting intestinal stem cell proliferation, and by promoting autophagy of nucleotide binding oligomeric domain like receptor protein 3(NLRP3),cell pyroptosis is inhibited. This article reviews the specific mechanisms by which traditional Chinese medicine regulates the above-mentioned pathways through the latest literature,in order to provide new ideas for the development and clinical treatment of traditional Chinese medicine, thus exerting the therapeutic effect on radiation induced enteritis.
