Qualitative study on the psychological experience of pregnant women with fear of childbirth based on the basic psychological needs theory
Objective To understand psychological experience of pregnant women with fear of childbirth(FOC)based on the basic psychological needs theory(BPNT).Methods A total of 13 FOC pregnant women who had their delivery in 3 Grade A hospitals in Yangzhou from February to May 2022 was selected by purpose sampling method,and were interviewed in a semi-structured manner using the phenomenological analysis method,and Colaizzi's 7-step analysis method was used to analyze interview data and refine the themes.Results A total of 4 themes and 7 sub-themes were identified:Unmet need for autonomy(low participation in the birth plan,low sense of self-control dur-ing labor);Unmet need for competence(lack of knowledge about labor,low self-efficacy in labor);Unmet need for relatedness(unmet need for support from healthcare workers,unmet need for support from family,and unmet need for support from peers);Co-existence of positive and negative coping.Conclusion Healthcare workers need to pro-mote pregnant women's participation in birth planning to reduce the sense of birth loss and enhance autonomy needs satisfaction,provide multiple forms of information support to enhance birth self-efficacy and competence needs satis-faction,promote multiple social support to enhance relatedness needs satisfaction,and improve negative coping strategies to enhance basic psychological needs satisfaction and promote perinatal mental health.
