Objective To explore the clinical application effect of a self-developed novel needle disposal device for insulin injection pen. Methods A novel needle disposal device for insulin injection pen was developed to prevent needlestick injuries during the disassembling of insulin pen needles.A total of 99 patients with diabetes or elevated blood glucose levels requiring insulin pen needle injections in neurosurgery department were selected.A total of 49 patients who received a total of 1,497 injections from March 2021 to February 2022 were selected as the control group by using the conventional method of insulin pen needle disassembling, while a total of 50 patients who received a total of 1,425 injections from March 2022 to February 2023were selected as the observation group by using the no-vel insulin pen needle disposal device. The average disassembling time of insulin pen needles, incidence of needlestick injuries, compliance rate of disposal protocol, and nurse compliance and satisfaction were compared between 2 groups. Results The average disassembling time of insulin pen needles in the observation group was shorter than that in the control group. The compliance rate of disposal protocol in the observation group was higher than that in the control group.Nurse compliance and satisfaction in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).The incidence of needlestick injuries in the ob-servation group was 0 case, which was lower than 3 cases in the control group, and the difference was not statistical-ly significant(P=0.262).Conclusion The novel disposal device of insulin pen needle can save nurses'time in dispo-sing of insulin pen needles, standardize operational behaviors, effectively reduce needlestick injuries, and improve nurse compliance and satisfaction.
