Critical Discourse Analysis of News about"Depression"in Chinese and American Mainstream Newspapers
In recent years,depression has become the focus of Chinese and Western media.Two corpora have been built in this study by selecting news reports on depression from The New York Times and China Daily from 2020 to 2021.Based on Fairclough Three-Dimensional Model and with the help of corpus tools,comparative analysis is conducted on high-frequency words,collocations and in-dex lines in the text analysis dimension;in the dimension of discourse practice,news source is ana-lyzed;in the dimension of social practice,the social and cultural factors behind news are revealed.It is found that The New York Times use negative emotional color words more frequently than China Daily.The New York Times focuses more on the presentation of discourse from the perspective of patients with depression;China Daily focuses on the presentation of discourse from the perspective of the state and government.
