Relationship Transmutation Research of"You"and"I"in William Gold-ing's Works from the Perspective of Ethics
The characters portrayed by Golding in his novels have undergone a long process of evo-lution in their understanding of the relationship between themselves and others. In his early works, the protagonists were obsessed with the"I-It"relationship,deeply immersed in the world of"It,"and un-able to break free. They objectified and utilized others, seeing them as tools to improve one's own liv-ing conditions, and hoping to harvest happiness in this"I-It"relationship.However,the reality made them feel lost and painful,so they placed their hopes on utopian imagination or the divine world, which was futile in fact. Not until the characters'relationships changed from"I-It"to"I-You"Golding begin to pay attention to and enter the"You"world, defining oneself by loving others, respecting oth-ers,and giving to others. In such a way,a sense of being in a society gradually returns and one's self-value is reflected vividly.
