Alum,one of the major additives in the paste concocted for the mounting of Chinese painting and calligraphy,is antibacterial and prevents borers.However,excessive use of alum will have negative impacts on the paste and the mounted Chinese painting and calligraphy.To find out the influence of alum on the paste and the mounted Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as to determine the optimum amount of alum to be added in the paste concocted for the mounting of Chinese painting and calligraphy,this article adopts multiple analytical methods to compare the effects that different amounts of alum have on the paste and properties of the mounted Chinese painting and calligraphy.The results show that,when the dosage of alum exceeds 5％,the more alum is added,the poorer the performance of the paste becomes and the more degradation the mounted Chinese painting and calligraphy experience.It is recommended that the optimum amount of alum added in the paste for the mounting of Chinese painting and calligraphy should not exceed 5％.
