Stele Commemorating Levees Built by the Revered Mr.XIA,whose full name is Inscription on Stele Commemorating Newly Built Levees By the County Magistrate, the Revered Mr.XIA,was accomplished in the sixth year of Chongzhen Era in Ming Dynasty. To commemorate the Magistrate of Mengjin County,XIA Shiyu, building levees to stop the Yellow River from flooding southward,WANG Duo authored the content and wrote in red ink for the stone inscription. As the stele itself is lost, the rubbing seen today may be the only one that has survived. Therefore,it is significant as a cultural relic,a historical document and a piece of calligraphy art,and can be used as new archaeological evidence in the research into the history and culture related to Yellow River conservancy.Given the fact that the main content of Stele Commemorating Levees Built by the Revered Mr.XIA is almost identical to Stele Commemorating the Newly Built Levees, which is included in WANG Duo's collected works, with proper investigation and collation, the missing parts can be filled up,and the errors can be corrected. This article discusses and analyses issues among the inscription on the stele, the content of Stele Commemorating the Newly Built Levees, and records in County Annals of Mengjin, which was supplemented and revised during the reign of Emperor Jiaqing. It is believed that the content of Stele Commemorating Levees Built by the Revered Mr.XIA and that of Stele Commemorating the Newly Built Levees are in fact from the same passage written by WANG Duo,and that the inscription on Stele Commemorating the Newly Built Levees was deliberately altered to contradict with what was on Stele Commemorating Levees Built by the Revered Mr.XIA.The supplement to County Annals of Mengjin and revision during the reign of Emperor Jiaqing solely referred to Stele Commemorating the Newly Built Levees, and there might be concocted records. As a result, the extant rubbing of Stele Commemorating Levees Built by the Revered Mr.XIA can be used as tangible evidence to supplement inadequacies of historical records and correct errors in historical documents.
