A large number of white pottery have been unearthed from Qianjiaping Site in Guiyang,and these are mainly long-necked jars,ring-footed plates and gui.All of the white pottery is decorated with elaborate patterns of diverse meanings and significance.The white pottery was important items used in sacrificial rites and other rituals.The analysis of clay composition shows that,in the white pottery,the content of Fe2O3 is generally less than 6%,which is much lower than that in pottery with white coating.At that time,as people could distinguish the clay,they made different vessels and used them in different rituals.Long-necked white pottery jars of Aa and B types were used in sacrificial rites for the Heaven,white pottery plates and gui were used to hold precious offerings,and ring-footed plates were probably held high during the rites.Ancient people believed in simulated sorcery,and decorated white pottery vessels with patterns like flying birds carrying the sun and fangs to control weather.
