This article centers on the character"卤"inscribed on Ba-Bo gui,which was unearthed from a Western Zhou cemetery in Dahekou Village in Shanxi's Yicheng,and adopts the connection method to examine unearthed documents that contain character patterns related to"盐"and"卤".Going through relevant materials,the author believes that the characters"(盝)"and"(鹵口)"inscribed on the bronze vessels unearthed from the cemetery discovered in Dahekou Village should be seen as a variant form of the character"卤"rather than"盐".In Shang and Zhou dynasties,the character pattern"(鹵皿)"should have pronunciations that fell into the archaic Chinese rhyme categories of Tan and Yu.The pronunciation of the character pattern"(鹵皿)"in the rhyme category of Tan mainly served as a component in the character"簟"before Spring & Autumn Period.During Warring States Period,the character pattern"(鹵皿)"was mostly read as"盐(yan)".Meanwhile,on the seal of the State of Qi,the character"(目皿)",which was previously deciphered as the character"盐",should be an elliptic variant of the character"监"and pronounced as"盐"(yan).
