After years of archaeological surveys and excavations in Luoyang area, over 30 palaeolithic sites,or spots, have been discovered. The majority are found in the loess deposits and caves along the Luohe River and the Yihe River, both of which belong to the Yellow River system, and some scatter in the basin of the Yuhe River, which is of the Yangtze River system. The history of ancient humans once lived in this area can be traced back to 300,000 to 400,000 years ago,i.e.,the early Palaeolithic Period. After their evolution from Homo erectus to Homo sapiens, they kept enhancing their adaptability to the environment, and could flexibly use various resources to meet their survival needs. But,their utilisation of simple stone flaking techniques persisted throughout. It is an important basis for the hypothesis of the continuous evolution of ancient humans in China.
