The prehistoric pottery kilns discovered in Gansu and Qinghai area can be classified into two phases and four stages.According to the spatial relationship of the kiln and the fire chamber,they can be divided into two types,i.e.,single-chambered pottery kilns and multi-chambered pottery kilns.The multi-chambered pottery kilns fall into three types,i.e.,horizontal ones,inclined ones and vertical ones.In the early Yangshao Culture period,the horizontal multi-chambered pottery kilns were prevalent.When it was the middle Yangshao Culture period,the inclined multi-chambered pottery kilns became more common.The vertical multi-chambered pottery kilns newly appeared in Majiayao Culture and Qijia Culture periods.There was unbalanced development of pottery kilns in different regions of Gansu and Qinghai area.The evolution of the discovered pottery kilns is closely related to the middle reaches of the Yellow River.Meanwhile,local cultural elements had certain influence on the development of pottery kilns in Gansu and Qinghai area.
