Two major motifs on the Miaodigou type painted pottery are the petal pattern and the convoluted, connected pattern, both of which are plant patterns. The petal pattern mainly mimics the plane shape of blooming flowers, with the realistic background patterns as the main composition. The convoluted, connected pattern mainly depicts the sideways silhouette of twining corollas of plants, and its composition mostly involves abstract, freehand colour patterns. In quite a long time, both motifs and two kinds of composition coexisted and alternated, jointly creating classic two-dimensional composition of patterns on China's prehistoric painted pottery.
