Research advances on the biological characteristics and breeding technology of seahorse(Hippocampus abdominalis)
The seahorse(Hippocampus abdominalis)inhabits southwestern Pacific Ocean and the wa-ters near Oceania and New Zealand. Its large size, strong disease resistance and high survival rate in seedling cultivation make this species high in medicinal and economic values. In recent years,continu-ous global climate change has been impacting the marine ecosystems and reducing the natural resource of this species.Such scenario is even becoming worse due to the market demand increase. As a result,H.abdominalis has been listed in Appendix Ⅱ of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES).The researches relating to its resource conservation and de-velopment,reproductive biology and aquaculture technology are receiving intensifying attentions. In 2016,H.abdominalis was introduced into China where its artificial breeding of seedlings has met suc-cess and boomed currently. In this paper,we summarized the research findings in the biology and arti-ficial breeding of H.abdominalis, and prospected the research direction, trying to provide a powerful reference for the resource protection and artificial breeding technology development of H.abdominalis.
