A Village Place Naming Classification Method Based on Grounded Theory:A Case Study of Quanzhou City
As a cultural symbol reflecting regional characteristics and geographical indications, place names possess rich cultural attributes.Traditional methods of place naming classification have certain limitations in terms of objectivity, systematicity, precision, and interpretation of the cultural meanings embedded in place names. In order to comprehensively understand and explore the cultural attributes inherent in place names, this study takes 9417 village names in Quanzhou City as an example and applies Grounded Theory to explore and construct a new method of place name classification. The research indicates that this method effectively addresses the issues of non-uniqueness and inaccuracy in classification interpretation caused by factors such as dialects, proper nouns, and polysemy, thereby enhancing the scientificity and accuracy of place name classification results.Furthermore, spatial feature analysis reveals that names of natural features are mainly concentrated in plain areas, while names of geographical features tend to aggregate with increasing elevation.Surnames-based place names are concentrated in the coastal areas within plain regions, while other categories of place names are concentrated in regions with complex and varied topography. The findings provide a new and valuable methodological approach for place naming classification, and offer scientific methodological support for further research on the mechanisms of place name generation and evolution.
