In this article we conduct an in-depth comparative study on two typical traditional residential buildings in Fuzhou area:Chaiban house and courtyard-style house.By analyzing the architectural characteristics of the two in terms of spatial layout,facade and decoration,roof form,we compare their differences.By comparison,we point out that the differences between Chaiban house and courtyard-style house reflect the differences in socio-economic status and cultural background.Chaiban house more reflects the economic practicality of low-income groups in the city,while courtyard-style house highlights the social status and aesthetic pursuit of high-ranking officials.The research results not only provide a theoretical basis for the protection and restoration of traditional residential buildings in Fuzhou,but also provide a new perspective for understanding the social and cultural development of the Fuzhou region.
