The Historical Understanding of Revolutionaries in Taiwan During the Great Revolution——Centered on"Documents on Unruly Groups:The Section on People in Taiwan"and Rare Publications
During the period of the Great Revolution(1924-1927),revolutionaries in Taiwan living in various parts of main-land China were the pioneers in reflecting on Taiwan history since its cession to Japan under the"Treaty of Shimonoseki".By examining secret archives compiled by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, entitled"Documents on Unruly Groups:The Section on People in Taiwan",as well as various rare publications by revolutionaries in Taiwan,it can be observed that differ-ences in ideological beliefs among revolutionaries in Taiwan during this period led to divergent interpretations of history.Anar-chists criticized the various tyrannies that followed Taiwan's cession to Japan, but their perspective lacked historical depth.Marx-ists,on the other hand, used imperialism and historical materialism to interpret Taiwan history, achieving an unprecedented level of historical depth.Meanwhile, nationalists attempted to garner sympathy from mainland readers by reviewing Taiwan history and even used this to argue for the integration of the revolution in Taiwan into the broader national revolution.Although their his-torical perspectives and the realities they encountered on the mainland varied, their reflections became an important foundation, serving as a stepping stone for later revolutionaries in Taiwan to deepen their historical understanding.
