Schoolgirl:The"May Fourth"Imagery in Ba Jin's Narration and Beyond
By examining the diverse images of"female students"in Ba Jin's novels and the underlying"May Fourth"ideologies, this paper aims to explore why the"Torrent Trilogy",which has a significant impact on readers, revisits the May Fourth period many years after its conclusion, and what its significance is.This is based on the enlightener Ba Jin's personal experience in the 1930s,where he witnessed the obstruction and questioning of May Fourth values.Furthermore, his defense and further contem-plation on this matter led to the"Torrent Trilogy"becoming not only a modern novel that directly reflects May Fourth values but also a work that plays a pivotal role in the dissemination and practice of May Fourth values in Chinese society.Viewing Ba Jin and his creation from this perspective reveals the extraordinary value and special significance of Ba Jin's works in the moderniza-tion of Chinese ideological consciousness.Ba Jin's attention and contemplation on the fate of"former female students"remains a valid ideological resource for today's discussions on women's liberation.
