Impact of Bullying Victimization on Adolescents'Depression:Roles of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategy and Social Support
A survey was conducted on 5 013 middle school students using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D),Delaware Bullying Victimization Scale-Student(DBVS-S),Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support(MSPSS),and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire(CERQ).There were 1 446 students with bullying victimization selected as the research subjects to explore the mediating and regulatory mechanisms of cognitive emotion regulation strategy and social support in the relation between bullying victimization and adolescents'depression. The results showed that bullying victimization, depression, negative cognitive emotion regulation strategy, and social support significantly correlated with each other(P<0.05).Bullying victimization represented no significant correlation with positive cognitive emotion regulation, but with other three variables(P<0.05).Bullying victimization could significantly and positively predict adolescents'depression. The negative cognitive emotion regulation strategy played a significant mediating role between bullying victimization and adolescents'depression, while no significant mediating role of positive cognitive emotion regulation strategy was observed in above relation.Social support played as a significant moderator in the relation between bullying victimization and adolescents'depression,as well as in the relation between bullying victimization and negative cognitive emotion regulation strategy. The findings showed that bullying victimization not only directly exacerbated adolescents'depression but also indirectly increased depression levels by increasing the adoption of negative cognitive emotion regulation strategy.Social support could buffer the effects of bullying victimization on negative cognitive emotion regulation strategy and adolescents'depression.
