Study on correlation between main symptoms and quality of life in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies during chemotherapy
Objective To explore the impact of main symptoms on quality of life in patients undergoing chemotherapy for gastrointestinal malignancies, aiming to provide evidence for effective symptoms management in this population. Methods A cohort of 170 patients with gastrointestinal malignancies undergoing chemotherapy were assessed for symptoms using the M.D.Anderson Symptom Inventory(MDASI).Multiple stepwise regression analysis was conducted to identify the factors influencing symptom severity. Results The average MDASI score among patients with gastrointestinal malignancy undergoing chemotherapy was(74.72±24.83).The top three symptoms with the highest severity were sadness(4.82±1.47),sleep disturbance(4.59±1.25)and fatigue(4.54±1.48).The total quality of life score of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies during chemotherapy was(69.70±11.02),and the score of main symptoms during chemotherapy was negatively correlated with the score of quality of life. The result of factor analysis showed that patients'age, tumor stage, course of disease, frequency of chemotherapy, toxic and side effects and platelet count were the main factors affecting the quality of life of patients with gastrointestinal malignancy during chemotherapy.Multiple regression result showed that sadness symptom score and sleep disturbance symptom score were both strong influencing factors of quality of life(P<0.001,R=0.406).Conclusion The disruption of quality of life in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies undergoing chemotherapy is primarily associated with factors such as tumor stage, sadness and sleep disturbance symptom score.Clinically, medical rehabilitation programs for these patients can be formulated and optimized to reduce the impact of main chemotherapy symptoms, thereby improving management effectiveness and improving overall quality of life.
