Objective To study the antibacterial efficacy of chloral hydrate. Methods The suspension quantitative killing test was used to determine the ability of chloral hydrate at different concentrations and for differ-ent durations of action to kill Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albi-cans.Results The killing logarithm values of 2.5%chloral hydrate for Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aerug-inosa and Candida albicans were all below 3.00.The killing logarithm values of more than 5.0%chloral hydrate for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli all exceeded 3.00.The killing logarithm values of 5.0%and 7.5%chloral hydrate for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans after 2 min were all less than 3.00.When the concentration or duration of action was increased, the killing logarithm values were all higher than 3.00.Conclusion The antibacterial efficacy of chloral hydrate can be enhanced with the increase of concentrations and durations of action.Chloral hydrate at the concentrations of 5.0%to 10.0%is safe enough to be used in anti-infec-tion treatment in clinical surgery.
