The Impact of Smart City Construction on the High-Quality Development of Urban Economy——An empirical examination based on urban panel data
As a crucial initiative for promoting the development of modern cities,the construction of smart cities has a profound impact on the high-quality economic development of urban areas.This paper,based on panel data from 250 cities in China,employs the Difference-in-Differences(DID)approach along with the Propensity Score Matching-Difference in Dif-ferences(PSM-DID)method to investigate the impact of smart city construction on the high-quality economic development of cities and its underlying mechanisms.The research finds that smart city construction significantly enhances the Total Factor Productivity(TFP)of cities,thereby improving the quality of urban economic development.Smart cities play a vital interme-diary role in economic development by promoting industrial upgrading and technological investment.The study also reveals regional disparities in the construction of smart cities.Based on these findings,continued support for smart city construction is recommended,particularly in advancing digital infrastructure and technology application.Moreover,considering the specific conditions of different regions,differentiated smart city development strategies should be formulated to promote high-quality economic development.
