Research on the impact of population movement on the consumer market——Analysis based on the data from 32 large-and medium-sized cities in China
With the acceleration of globalization,marketization,industrialization and urbanization,as well as the transformation of population mobility policies,the scale of China's floating population has grown rapidly.In this context,the consumer market,which fo-cuses on population flow,is of great significance to expand domestic demand and promote the quality and efficiency of consumption.This paper uses the data of 32 large and medium-sized cities in China from 2011 to 2021(net population inflow to cities)to explore the impact of population flow on the consumer market.The results show that population inflow has a promoting effect on the expansion of the con-sumer market in large and medium-sized cities,but this promotion effect is heterogeneous.Specifically,in large and medium-sized cities in the eastern and central regions,the inflow of population promotes the expansion of the scale of the consumer market,while the impact of population inflow on the scale of the consumer market in the western region is not obvious.The mechanism test shows that the wage level has an intermediary effect in the process of population flow affecting the urban consumer market.The inflow of population has in-creased the income level of residents in large and medium-sized cities,increased their willingness and ability to consume,and thus had a positive impact on the expansion of the consumer market.Based on this,tapping the consumption potential of the floating population,im-proving the employment market of the floating population,and increasing the income of the floating population are important ways to expand the consumer market and build a new development pattern.
