Cost-Benefit Analysis of Maize Production in Brazil
Brazil has become China's largest source of maize imports, and forms a competitive relationship with the U-nited States, which is of great significance to ensure China's food security.Based on the official data of maize production,we measured the cost-benefit of maize production in Brazil, and compared with China and the United States. The results indicate that:First, due to a significant increase in agricultural input prices, from 2019 to 2023,the total production cost of corn in Brazil rose from 2,956.44 reais per hectare to 5,963.70 reais per hectare, with a cumulative increase of 101.72%and an average annual growth rate of 19.18%.The main components of Brazil's corn production costs include investments in agricultural machinery, seeds, pesticides, fertilizers,as well as land and depreciation.Second, against the backdrop of rising food prices in the interna-tional market,Brazil's corn production revenue has increased annually, rising from 923.80 reais per hectare in 2019 to 1,480.33 reais per hectare in 2023,a cumulative increase of 60.24%and an average annual growth of 12.51%.Third,based on the cost-benefit assessment index system for Chinese agricultural products,a comparison of corn production costs between China, the United States, and Brazil shows that Brazil has certain cost and profit advantages over the United States.Based on this,it is suggested that government departments strengthen cooperation with Brazilian authorities, encourage domestic enterprises to deepen their engagement in Brazil's grain sources, enhance the ability to collect and disseminate industrial information, establish stable channels for Brazilian corn imports to China, and simultaneously accelerate the release of potential for cost reduction and efficiency enhancement in domestic corn production to ensure a stable supply of corn in China through multiple measures.
