From the perspective of grammaticalization and semantic change,this paper re-examines metaphorical projection through the changes of semantic meaning of a word.Metaphorical projection refers to the loss of some meaning among the explicit or implicit semantic meanings of a word,and the retained meaning causes the entry of a word from one semantic category to another through meaning change or abstraction.This is a kind of mutation due to the conscious innovation of the speaker.Metaphorical project often led to the production of content words,but the semantic meaning of lexical items often causes varying degrees of virtual and real changes in the process of projection.
