The four large tombs discovered at the Guojiamiao cemetery are dated between the West-em-Eastern Zhou transition and the early Spring and Autumn period.Of them, tombs GM21 and CM1 are tombs of the Marquises Qi and Xiangbai of Zeng.By contrast, the five large tombs at Zaoshulin cemetery date to the middle Spring and Autumn period, and tomb occupants of M1 90,M1 68,and M1 29 are the Marquises Qiu,Bao,and De of Zeng, respectively. The genealogical sequence of the Marquises of Zeng seems quite complete.Combining archaeological evidence with textual evidence,we suggest that the tombs of the Marquises of Zeng at Guojiamiao cemetery date no later than 690 BC,and that Marquis Qiu was the first king of the Zeng state to have been buried at the Zaoshulin cemetery(and his reign was between 690 and 646 BC).During the Western-Eastern Zhou transition and the middle Spring and Autumn period, tombs of the Marquises of Zeng were characterized by a sloping ramp and had sep-arate burials for chariots and horses.
