Scientific Analysis and Research of Bronze Containers Unearthed from Three Groups of Tombs of Zeng State's Marquises at Zaoshulin Cemetery in Suizhou of Hubei Province
At the Zaoshulin cemetery in Suizhou of Hubei Province, three tombs of the Zeng State's Marquises yielded bronze artifacts in consecutive chronological order with clear backgrounds.Among them, bronze vessels with inscriptions from the states of Zeng,Chu,and Tang often exhibit a chemical composition with high tin and low lead, implying the abundance of tin materials.Tin from the moun-tainous areas in the south was extensively imported into the Jianghan Plain, resulting in the short-term popularity of high-tin bronze vessels in various states. The clay core of a bronze fu from tomb M191,supposedly belonging to the Chu King Ying Yu Mi,contains a significant amount of plant materials,in-dicating a clear influence from the core manufacturing techniques in the Jianghuai region.Furthermore, some bronze containers show elements of the Huaiyi culture and were made from lead from the Wan-jiang River area. These features suggest the mutual exchange and external communication of bronze casting technology and resources have occurred among various states in the Jianghan region during the mid-Spring and Autumn period. This contributes to the explanation of the stylistic evolution of bronze artifacts during the Spring and Autumn period and the understanding of the inheritance and integration of Chu culture with the cultures of the Han and Huai regions.
