Prone burials are widely noticed at prehistoric cemeteries in southern China, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the Yellow River basin.Based on the proportion and char-acteristics of prone burials in Neolithic cemeteries, prehistoric prone burials can be classified into four types, each representing different funeral beliefs. The temporal and spatial distribution of each type of prone burial and their cultural characteristics suggest the close relationship between southern China and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The prone burials in the middle and lower reaches of the Yel-low River may also be related to those in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.By contrast, prone burials in the Yangtze River's lower reaches and the Yellow River's upper reaches may have developed independently.
