At Yin Ruins,a kind of bronze ware with the inscription"Ya-Jiang"was unearthed from the tomb of Fu-Hao and some noble tombs."Ya-Jiang,"also referred to as"Jiang,"is the inscription of the Jiang ethnic group.Bronzes inscribed with Ya-Jiang are mainly dated to the early period and less to the late period of Yin Ruins. This is compatible with the oracle bones'records of Jiang group's activi-ties,indicating that Jiang group was active during the Shang king Wu-Ding's reign.Jiang group are the descendants of the Shang king Zu-Yi,a branch of the royal family, and they maintained close relations with Wu-Ding and Fu-Hao.Wu-Ding relied heavily on Jiang and awarded Jiang the title of marquis. However,as Jiang chief passed away during the early and middle phases of Wu-Ding's reign, the rela-tionship between Jiang group and the royal family was gradually estranged. The research on Jiang group and Jiang bronze groups helps understand the relationship between the Shang Dynasty's central govern-ment and local government.
