Among the more than 50 tombs of Sui dynasty unearthed from Wuchang area, more than a half have ear chambers.By comparing ear chamber tombs with relevant materials, this paper con-cludes that the specific burial custom was directly influenced by the late Northern and Southern Dynas-ties tombs in the Yunshui River Basin of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The appearance of ear chambers in the tombs of the Yunshui River Basin should be derived from the custom of setting ear chambers or small niches in the tombs of the Guanlong region. This is related to the historical back-ground that the"East of the Han River Area"was successively controlled by the Western Wei and Northern Zhou after the first year of Emperor Jianwen's Dabao era of the Liang. After the Sui con-quered Chen and unified the country, this kind of burial custom was absorbed by the Wuchang area in the south of the Yangtze River, and finally formed the tomb shape system with regional characteristics.
