From June to September 2023,in coordination with the infrastructure project in Xi-angyang City, the Hubei Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology,in conjunction with the Xiangyang Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, conducted the third excavation of the Wangzhai cemetery in Xiangyang.A total of 52 tombs were cleared up,revealing a family cemetery that extensively used pictorial bricks from the Southern and Northern Dynasties period.Among them, the portrait bricks in tomb M299 were rich in content. The unearthed epitaph indicated that the tomb owner was buried in the ninth year of the Datong era of the Southern Liang Dynasty(543 AD).This tomb provides important evidence for studying the Southern Dynasty pictorial brick tombs and funeral customs in Xiangyang and the middle reaches of the Han River region.
