In recent years, guided by new research concepts regarding urban settlement structures and layouts, significant discoveries have been made concerning road networks and high-status architec-tural complexes within cities from the late Neolithic to the Western Zhou period.Notably, the discovery of the"multi-palace grid"layout at the Erlitou site is particularly striking, but its significance extends beyond the Erlitou culture or era.Related buildings'institutional construction or layout attempts were not limited to the Erlitou cultural period, either. This urban layout, characterized by interlocking facili-ties that enclose and divide space into relatively regular geometric plans, can be referred to as the"Block System."Although it is currently unclear whether distinct social classes, kinship, ethnic groups,or functional distinctions existed within different blocks of urban settlements in the lower and middle reaches of the Yellow River from the Longshan to the Western Zhou periods, research on the grid-like spatial layout of block-style cities necessitates a detailed synchronic study within the boundaries defined by key markers such as road networks, water systems, and fences, focusing on the spatial and demo-graphic reconstruction.
