The"Changsha residence"is not mentioned in the historical records of the Han Dynasty, yet it has been frequently identified in excavated documents. The relevant archaeological materials pri-marily include a seal and two batches of bamboo slips from the Western Han period.A systematic anal-ysis of these artifacts reveals insights into the scope of functions and location of the Changsha residence.By integrating information from historical documents,we also draw parallels with similar residences in other commanderies and kingdoms and infer the existence of other levels and types of residences estab-lished during the Han Dynasty, such as those for regional governors(Zhou Cis hi),for governors of bar-barian(Manyi)peoples,for counties(Xianyi)and frontier areas(Biansai),as well as the subsequent de-velopment and evolution of these residences.
