The middle Huaihe River region is a significant distribution area for the Late Dawenkou Culture, yet empirical studies on the origins of its populations are lacking. This study focuses on the birthplace and migration patterns of the Late Dawenkou people in this region.Strontium, carbon, and oxygen isotope analyses were conducted on human teeth and bones excavated from the Yuejiahu site in Fuyang, the Zhongyang site in Bengbu, and the Zhaozhuang site in Sihong. The results indicate that individuals at all three sites migrated from outside areas, likely during childhood or adolescence, possibly from southern Shandong and northern Jiangsu,as well as regions south of the Huaihe River. This evidence supports the historical occurrence of large-scale westward migration during the Late Dawenkou cultural period. The influx of migrants not only led to a sudden flourishing of the middle Huaihe River region during this period but also significantly influenced cultural and social changes in the Central Plains.
