The Yangtze Civilization in the Era of the Nine Provinces
The Book of Documents:Tribute of Yu describes the tributes paid to Da Yu during his governance over the land, detailing the tribute items and routes from various regions of the Jiu Zhou(Nine Provinces). The discovery of the inscription on the bronze vessel xu-containers from the Duke of Bin during the mid-Western Zhou period further supports the credibility of the Tribute of Yu.Although the concept of the"Nine Provinces"still requires validation through archaeological textual evidence,it is reasonable to define the"Era of the Nine Provinces"as occurring in the late period of the Five Em-perors,just before the establishment of the Xia Dynasty, which corresponds to the late Longshan period in archaeology. This paper begins by examining the tribute items from the provinces of Yang,Jing, and Liang as recorded in the Tribute of Yu,and it combines this with relevant archaeological findings from the Longshan period in the Yangtze River valley to demonstrate the credibility of the Tribute of Yu.
