The meaning of"Xigong(Western Palace)"in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions has long been debated. In the bronze vessels of the Zeng state with the Ji surname,"Western Palace"refers to the ancestral temple of the Zeng state, which venerates Wenwang(King Wen)as its ancestor. The interpre-tation of"Western Palace"related to the Zhou royal family is similar;as a temple structure,it specifical-ly denotes the Temple of King Wen,and as a metonym for a person,it exclusively refers to King Wen himself. The name"Western Palace"is associated with King Wen's title as"Western Earl."
