The Difference Principle,Egalitarianism and Prioritarianism
The difference principle is an integral part of Rawls's theory of justice. Many scholars explain it from the perspective of prioritarianism and state that when giving absolute priority to those in the worst situation, the difference principle does not consider the greater losses that those in better situations may suffer, resulting in leveling down. This problem mainly stems from its improper interpretation, not the issue of the difference prin-ciple itself. There is a difference between the difference principle and prioritarianism. The difference principle mainly adopts a comparative standard when defining the person in the worst situation, which differs from priori-tarianism concerning the absolute level of human beings.People should not interpret the difference principle in terms of prioritarianism but regard it as a deontic egalitarianism.
