Writing Microhistory in the Style of Modernist Literature?:A Study on Carlo Ginzburg's Think-ing and Practice on"Truthful"Historical Narrative
Carlo Ginzburg's microhistory writing adopts the style of modernist literature to ensure the truthfulness of historical narrative. He finds it impossible to write the truthful history of little people due to the limited histori-cal data, but the self-dissections of modernist literature can maintain the truthfulness of historical narratives. This style embodies three characteristics in Ginzburg's microhistory narrative:weakening the author's narra-tive authority, adopting a multi-perspective"polyphonic"structure,and strengthening the readers'independ-ent thinking.Ginzburg's exploration demonstrates a reasonable way to overcome postmodernist skepticism and reveals the unidentified content in the historiographic concept of"the revival of narrative history."Under the trend of information diversification, historical narratives in the style of modernist literature may become a rea-sonable choice for writing contemporary history.
