The impact of enteral nutrition on the nutritional status and inflammatory factors in elderly patients with heart failure
Objective To explore the influence of enteral nutrition on nutritional status and inflammatory markers in elderly individ-uals with heart failure.Method 108 elderly heart failure patients admitted to the Department of Geriatrics at Shanghai Fifth Rehabili-tation Hospital from May 2022 to January 2024 were selected as the research subjects.Utilizing a random number table method, the pa-tients were divided into the enteral nutrition group(n=54)and the control group(n=54).The enteral nutrition group was given enter-al nutrition support treatment on the basis of routine corrective heart failure treatment, and the control group was given ordinary diet on the basis of routine corrective heart failure treatment.Changes in nutritional status and levels of inflammatory factors were observed be-fore and after treatment in both groups. Results Before treatment, there were no statistically significant differences in nutritional indica-tors such as Mini Nutritional Assessment(MNA),Body Mass Index(BMI),Serum Total Protein(TP),and Albumin(ALB)be-tween the enteral nutrition group and the control group(P>0.05).After treatment, both groups showed increased scores in all four nutritional indicators, with higher scores observed in the enteral nutrition group(P<0.05).Before treatment, there was no statistical difference in NT-proBNP levels and 6-minute walking distance between the enteral nutrition group and the control group(P>0.05).After treatment, both groups showed a decrease in NT-proBNP levels, with the enteral nutrition group demonstrating lower levels.Ad-ditionally,both groups showed an increase in 6-minute walking distance, with the enteral nutrition group exhibiting a greater increase. These differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Before treatment, there were no statistically significant differences in serum IL-17 and IGF-1 levels between the enteral nutrition group and the control group(P>0.05).After treatment, the levels of IL-17 de-creased in both groups, with lower levels observed in the enteral nutrition group, and the levels of IGF-1 increased in both groups, with higher levels observed in the enteral nutrition group. These differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion Enteral nutrition support can improve the nutritional status of elderly heart failure patients, influencing and modulating the expression and activ-ity of inflammatory factors.
