Spatial Characteristics of Major Function Achievements in China's Urbanized Areas over the Past Decade and Future Layout Optimization
Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,the implementation of the Major Function Zoning Strategy has been accelerated.Urbanized regions,as defined in the national Major Function Zoning Planning,have assumed a fundamental role in aggregating population and industrial economy on a massive scale.However,this aggregative function exhibits spatial differentiation.By comparing population scale,GDP,and GDP per unit of construction land in 23 urbanized areas across national,provincial,and urban agglomeration scales for both 2010 and 2020 data sets,it's found that:1)The rank-size of population and economic aggregation remains relatively stable within China's urbanized areas,there is a significant north-south disparities in the rank-size change of construction efficiency.2)The level of population agglomeration continues to strengthen in the three major coastal urbanized regions,while the economic agglomeration level has declined.The Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta are the main regions experiencing increased population agglomeration,while the Western Taiwan Strait Urban Agglomeration and the Chengdu-Chongqing Urban Agglomeration are witnessing active economic aggregation.Construction efficiency in northern urbanized areas has consistently remained low,whereas southern regions exhibit relatively higher and more robust growth in construction efficiency.3)The level of population agglomeration at the provincial scale within urbanized areas has further increased,and overall construction efficiency within urban agglomerations tends to improve.In the future,the focus should be on redefining the major functions of urbanized areas,with an emphasis on establishing national or regional science and technology innovation centers.This entails strengthening the concentrated layout of emerging productive forces and promoting new industrialization.By fostering a harmonious and secure relationship between multifunctional coordinated development,synchronized population growth,and economic agglomeration can be achieved,thereby facilitating balanced and coordinated development.This approach will play a pivotal role in shaping the novel development pattern while realizing China's distinctive process of modernization.
