Innovation networks play vital roles in driving regional innovation development.Based on the patent cooperation data in 2010-2019 and taking Shanghai metropolitan region as the research area, this paper uses the buzz-and-pipeline model to construct the innovation cooperation networks at the county level, and analyzes the heterogenous effects of buzz-pipeline on the uneven innovation output of the region. The study reveals that:1)The innovation networks in the Shanghai metropolitan region have evolved into a tightly intertwined structure combining local buzz and regional pipelines. The districts within the region can be classified into four categories based on the different combinations of buzz and pipelines:network type, outward type, island type and inward type.2)The presen1ce of both buzz and pipelines in the innovation networks positively contributes to innovation output at the district level. However,an inverted"U"shaped relationship between the connectivity of buzz-pipeline and the innovation output is observed.3)The innovation development of China's metropolitan areas should comprehensively consider the differentiated impact of different innovation cooperation models on innovation output;it should take full advantage of the positive externalities of local and regional innovation networks and avoid the negative externalities of over-strong buzz and pipeline.
